| sodium propionate | was term of propionic acid (1986-2006) | |
| clobetasol propionate | A derivative of PREDNISOLONE with high glucocorticoid activity and low mineralocorticoid activity. Absorbed through the skin faster than FLUOCINONIDE, it is used topically in treatment of PSORIASIS but may cause marked adrenocortical suppression. |
| ciclopirox | The mechanism of action of ciclopirox has been investigated using various in vitro and in vivo infection models. One in vitro study suggested that ciclopirox acts by chelation of polyvalent cations (Fe+3 or Al+3) resulting in the inhibition of the metal-dependent enzymes that are responsible for the degradation of peroxides within the fungal cell. The clinical significance of this observation is not known. |
| nicotinamide | An important compound functioning as a component of the coenzyme NAD. Its primary significance is in the prevention and/or cure of blacktongue and PELLAGRA. Most animals cannot manufacture this compound in amounts sufficient to prevent nutritional deficiency and it therefore must be supplemented through dietary intake. |
| tazarotene | a topical acetylenic retinoid; a topical kerytolytic |
| laidlomycin propionate potassium | polycyclic, polyether, monocarboxylic acid posessing inhibitory activity against various Mycoplasma species, especially Acholeplasma laidlawii; structure |
| calcipotriene | a topical dermatologic for the treatment of moderate plaque psoriasis |
| erythromycin propionate | A macrolide antibiotic, produced by Streptomyces erythreus. It is the lauryl sulfate salt of the propionic ester of erythromycin. This erythromycin salt acts primarily as a bacteriostatic agent. In sensitive organisms, it inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 50S ribosomal subunits. This binding process inhibits peptidyl transferase activity and interferes with translocation of amino acids during translation and assembly of proteins. |
| fenoprofen | A propionic acid derivative that is used as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent. |
| carprofen | anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid class with selective inhibition of COX-2 versus COX-1 |
| oxaprozin | An oxazole-propionic acid derivative, cyclooxygenase inhibitor, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used in the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with of OSTEOARTHRITIS; RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS; and ARTHRITIS, JUVENILE. |
| hematoporphyrin | Iron-free derivatives of heme with 4 methyl groups, 2 hydroxyethyl groups and 2 propionic acid groups attached to the pyrrole rings. Some of these PHOTOSENSITIZING AGENTS are used in the PHOTOTHERAPY of malignant NEOPLASMS. |
